George McMillan, Principal, Harris Academy Greenwich

Hear from George McMillan, Principal of Harris Academy Greenwich, as he explains what sets Harris Academy Greenwich apart, and about working collaboratively as part of the Harris Federation.

I joined the Harris Federation in September 2012, having taken up the reigns of the predecessor school, Eltham Green, in January 2011 when it was in Special Measures. By the time of joining, the school was already out of Special Measures, but we wanted to find a MAT that was as forward thinking and quick moving as we were. Harris didn’t disappoint!  For me it is everything you would wish for from a local authority: a small but highly efficient centre of operations; plenty of support and challenge; good communication; clear and fair accountability; the autonomy to lead our Academy in the way it needs to flourish.

What we all share across all the Harris Academies is a shared sense of passion and commitment to improving the lives of our most disadvantaged students. While the strategies and ethos may vary widely across the Federation, what is you see in each school are teachers being supported to give the best possible education to our young people. There are some incredible teachers, support staff and leaders in our schools, and I thoroughly enjoy sharing best practice and learning from them.

As for my own school, it is an incredibly special place. We are a really happy, well resourced, highly successful, inner-city London 11-18 school with a thriving 6th Form, and a brand new state-of-the-art building.  It is a school where we are as passionate about developing our staff as we are about developing our students.

We have a fantastic reputation not only for some of the best results in the country, despite serving a very deprived catchment, but for the way our staff feel at work. I am always on the search for authentic teachers who enjoy what they do, who have great subject knowledge, charisma and have a strong sense of moral purpose, not just in terms of working with young people but buying into how we operate as a school and how we treat each other.

Harris Greenwich is a vibrant and exciting place in which to work, with an outstanding training programme to take the quality of teaching and leadership to truly world class.  The staff are highly valued and highly motivated, totally bought into our vision to develop successful students who demonstrate courage, behave with integrity and live happy lives.
