Meet our People: Sasha Fraser, ITE Professional Tutor

"I’ve always loved reading and English Literature and working with children and young people and teaching was an ideal way to combine both."

I decided I wanted to teach at the age of 17, after being given an opportunity to complete the International Baccalaureate. It made me realise how important education is and how education can open doors and opportunities you might not have considered before, particularly coming from a disadvantaged background myself. I wanted to help young people work towards their ambitions – after 18 years in the profession, it’s rewarding to see so many ex-students thriving!

I joined the Harris Federation in 2016 as an English Consultant and now work as a Professional Tutor as part of the Harris ITE team. I had never worked for a large Federation and I didn’t know what to expect from Harris, but I have found the experience to be incredibly positive. What I love about Harris is that the students really are at the heart of what we do: they are our most important people.

The most positive thing I have found whilst working with Harris is the level of support given to everyone – there are such strong networks across the Federation which help everyone to develop, especially for the early career teachers we work with in ITE.

As a Professional Tutor, the best bit about my job is working with the trainee teachers and seeing them develop across the year. Delivering training to the trainees is always enjoyable and I’m very fortunate to have a role supporting people at the beginning of their careers.

If I were asked for advice on someone considering becoming an English teacher, I would say go for it! Teaching is such a rewarding career. Come in to teaching because you really enjoy working with young people and you have a passion for your subject, but you also need perseverance, a strong work ethic and team spirit – although you’ll spend time on your own in the classroom, the support of your colleagues will be invaluable.

Harris is a great choice because you know you’ll get unrivalled training and support from the start, and this will continue as you progress. Harris offers so many opportunities to people at all levels of their career.

The top three qualities I look for in a trainee teacher are:

Commitment, the ability to communicate clearly to a range of different people and enthusiasm.
