Meet our People: Sherry Zand, English Consultant

At A level, I was inspired by a teacher who made a real difference to my learning experience. I wanted to help do the same for young people in my own career, and teaching provided a clear route for me to achieve that goal.

When I was looking to take the next step in my professional development, I wanted to be part of a large, successful academy trust, and the consultant position was exactly what I was looking for. I have the opportunity to work with schools across the Federation to help them deliver the best possible outcomes for students in English, which is a hugely varied role.

There have, of course, been challenges – you need to be prepared to work hard and demonstrate the same high level of commitment shared by all Harris staff. More specifically, I have had to juggle responsibilities at all the schools I support at the same time as fulfilling my Federation-wide role.

However, Harris is very good at providing time and resources working with various groups and people who can support, plan and offer expertise, and I have never doubted their trust in me to get the job done. I feel genuine appreciation from the schools and it is really rewarding to see what their students go on to achieve in my subject.

One of the great benefits of working here is ongoing training by a committed group who are truly excellent at what they do, and Harris has so many connections that open up new avenues for personal and professional development – for example, I’ve had the chance to complete my MA while working here. I am looking forward to taking on new challenges within the Federation as my career progresses, and the opportunities for this across the growing network are endless.
