“Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure the impact lasts in your absence.”

Sam facilitates ‘Leading for Teaching and Curriculum Excellence 1’ module within the reformed NPQH programme and the NPQEL residentials and has previously contributed to the NPQML and NPQH programmes under the former framework. She feels that it is always a privilege to be able to welcome visitors into the school, share what makes the staff proud about their setting, and learn from the experiences of others.

Sam’s first headship was at Harris Primary Academy Kent House. When she took over the school, it had been in and out of special measures for many years. Its results were the lowest in the borough and the whole community thought that this was acceptable. Within 3 years it was graded outstanding, had risen to be in the top 5% of schools nationally for progress and had become a creative and engaging place to learn. She then took on Harris Primary Academy Shortlands in 2016. It was graded outstanding in its first inspection in 2017 and is growing into an exceptional school. One parent described it as ‘a magical place to be’ when speaking to a prospective parent. Sam now works across a number of primaries, building on the strengths of each leadership team and the individual characteristics of the school.

Sam believes that teaching and leadership both offer individuals to work together to make a real difference to the life chances of children, and the communities they serve.
